the dalejrfan5794 show Dale Earnhardt's 1986 Wrangler Chevy

When Earnhardt left "15"and Ricky Rudd left "3", who organized the swap?
I know Wrangler stayed with the 15 when Rudd took over but also moved to the 3 with Ironhead. I'm just wondering, did Ricky and Dale work this out on their own, or Bud Moore and Childress? It just seems like something that wouldn't happen today, like Tony Stewart swapping rides with Dale Jr, etc. Anybody know the background?

This still does, and does not make sense to me, without knowing the amount of money that changed hands, and when, and to, or from whom.. Or what the written contracts said, or even if there where any..
It was pretty much all Childress.. He approached Earnhardt with the scheme in 1981, when Dale was winless, and suffering from lack of organization with a new team owner.. The meetings were held in a motel room, and apparently Kirk Shelmerdine was already involved..
Dale had been having trouble finishing races.. In a sport where nobody even thought about racing until the last fifty laps, Earnhardt had to lead every single lap, no matter the cost.. The cost became not finishing races, but he did lead many laps.. Richard Childress, and Kirk Shelmerdine had a plan.. They would develop a car that Dale could drive like Dale drives.. One that would be fast, and stay together for a whole race.. The car would be able to survive Dale Earnhardt.. It would take time, and Dale would drive for Bud Moore in the meantime (after starting with Childress), and Rudd would go to Childress.. Dale continued to not finish races for Bud Moore (that's when Dale earned a healthy respect for anyone who could finish in a Ford, and marveled at Davey Allison's driving skill later on)In the meantime Wrangler, who was Earnhardt's had gone to Childress with Dale, and when the switch was made, they where in contract with Childress already, so to stay with Dale, they sponsored the 15 Bud Moore car too.. Richard Childress had driven the 3 car, so when Dale went back to Childress he drove the blue, and yellow Wrangler #3 car, until it 1986.. In 1987 he became the black Goodwrench #3, and the rest is history as they say..
In 1987 at Pocono, Teresa Earnhardt was selling T-shirts at their trailer, and the most popular one was a white T-shirt with a blue, and yellow scrape (Wrangler colors) across the front, and black circles (tire marks) running through it.. The writing on the shirt said "guess who I ran into at the track today".. If I knew then what I know now, I would have bought as many as I could carry (and had Dale, and Teresa both sign them).. lol
