With the recent withdrawal of Honda, are there any older teams suitable to rejoin F1?
I can remember only the famous and highly successful British Team - Lotus. Where are they now?
Team Lotus doesn't exist anymore, the successor business was finally shut down in 1998. Lotus had stopped competing under it's own name at the end of 1994, when it merged with Pacific. I think that either Keith Wiggins or David Hunt still hold the rights to use the name "Team Lotus" for motorsport - more probably David Hunt (he's James Hunt's brother, btw).
Brabham (official name: "Motor Racing Developments Ltd") no longer exists as a legal entity either. A company called Landhurst Leasing probably gained the rights to use the name "Motor Racing Developments Ltd" when it was successful in having the team shut down over debts incurred by the parent company, Middlebridge Group Limited. There probably isn't a legal reason why one of the Brabham brothers couldn't start another team officially called "Brabham". The physical successor of the company now makes replica classic F1 cars.
Tyrrell also no longer exists, having been bought out by BAR, which was then bought out by Honda...which doesn't look like it will make the deadline of January 31st to find a buyer. The right to use the name Tyrrell probably stayed with the Tyrrell family after Ken's death in 2001, but there are no physical assets with which to produce F1 cars.
The "BRM" name is still owned by the Owen family, and has been "lent" to teams in recent years, notably John Mangoletsi and Keith Wiggins (yes, him again). There's no reason (except financial and motivational ones) why they couldn't start the team up again.
The "Cooper" name is now owned by BMW, so unless they start up a Toro-Rosso-like second team there's not much chance of seeing a Cooper on the grid.
Alfa Romeo and Maserati are both part of the FIAT Group, which owns Ferrari, so they won't be coming back either unless there is a Ferrari "B" team in the future.
The name "Vanwall" is now owned by the Dana Corporation and since 2003 has been used on road-legal sports cars which look like the classic F1 Vanwalls of the 1950s. They don't appear to have the scale to enter an F1 team.
The "Matra" name is owned by the Lagardère Group, which has diversified away from cars entirely, into publishing, aeronautics, media, retail and even a minority holding in EADS. They could easily start up or buy an F1 team, but they probably wouldn't want to waste all that money when they are already one of the most famous companies in the world.
Ligier Automobiles still exist (although the physical assets of the F1 team were transferred to Alain Prost in 1997). They make micro-cars and don't have the resources to get back into F1.
