Is there any objective way to measure sleep?
I rarely can tell how many hours of sleep I get because it takes me so long to get to sleep at night, I don't know when I actually fall asleep. Keeping a clock nearby is not an option because constantly looking at the clock makes me feel frustrated and anxious about not being able to sleep which makes it more difficult to fall asleep (follow into viscous circle here). I've tried the sleep tracker watch, but it only worked about half the time. Is there any other way to objectively measure sleep on a daily basis?
I can't have someone watch me sleep every night. Other people have to sleep too.
I'm looking for something I can use at home every night.
I am not sure why you want to measure how long you sleep. Maybe you are like me and wake up a number of times each night (or each day since I stay up very late).
Rather than figuring out how long I have slept, I find it more useful to see how I feel. Do I still feel groggy like I haven't slept anough? I check the clock to figure out when I have to get out of bed to start my day.
I am on Social Security Disability. I work on a freelance part-time basis, but I don't have to keep the steady sleep schedule that most people do. I guess that is a combination of good news and bad news.
If you have a serious or semi-serious problem with sleep, there are sleep laboratories where doctors monitor your sleep cycles and the quality of your sleep. One problem is that these labs are expensive, and most insurance companies don't want to pay for it unless you have a serious sleep disability. If you have insurance, your regular doctor will have to refer you to a sleep lab.
