How long does a Mars Rover last?
Can someone please answer this question cause I cannot find on google or on the NASA site.
There is no set time limit. The current MERs (Spirit and Opportunity) were originally designed for relatively short missions of 90 days each, however after landing in January 2004, Opportunity has now spent 1757 days on Mars and Spirit 1778 days, close to 20 times the original planned mission duration. No one knows just exactly how long they will go on running; both of them have encountered a few technical problems, but so far none have been serious enough to prevent the rover from moving at all or disable any highly important onboard equipment (such as cameras or computer systems). Naturally, NASA is very pleased about how long the machines have managed to last, and as far as I know they have every intention of keeping a team working with the rovers until such time as they both give up the ghost.
By comparison, the Sojourner rover that landed in 1997 lasted for 83 days on the surface of Mars. The next mobile vehicle to be landed on Mars, the Mars Science Laboratory (scheduled for launch in October 2009, will land on Mars sometime around August 2010), has a minimum expected mission time of one year and a scheduled mission duration of two years, and although its reliance on radioactive decay for its power source gives it a maximum lifespan (as compared to the solar-powered Spirit and Opportunity, which could in theory be powered more or less forever so long as their hardware stays running and the Sun keeps shining), Wikipedia states that this power source will not drop below adequate power levels until some 14 years have passed, meaning that the rover could potentially keep running until the early 2020s. There is no reason that even more advanced rovers could not last for far longer still, especially if built with self-repair capabilities.
