More DVDR / RW are advertised as with a 4.7GB capacity. However, these films seem to have less than 4.7 GB because many manufacturers said, citing the capacity of a DVD using prefixes decimal rather than binary prefixes used by some software. This can be confusing for many users. Even if a DVD of 4.7 GB allows to store 4.7 billion bytes: 4,700,000,000 bytes 1000 B / kB = 4,700,000 kB 1000 kB / MB = 4700 MB 1000 MB / GB = 4.7 GB, using binary prefixes in the same capacity is approximately 4.38 GB: 4.7 billion bytes 1024 B / KB = 4589844 KB 1024 KB / MB = 1024 MB 4482.27 MB / GB = 4.38 GB

Mini DVD sold for use with video cameras generally have a capacity of approximately 1.7 GB.

DL DVD Recorder are advertised as having 8.5GB

The actual storage capacity of DVD discs are

DVD-R = 4.36GiB - 4.38GiB

DVD-RW = 4.36GiB - 4.38GiB

DVD + R = 4.36GiB - 4.37GiB

DVD + RW = 4.36GiB - 4.37GiB

DVD-RAM = 4.26GiB - 4.27GiB

As you can see the DVD-RAM has less space (varies 100 MB to 120 MB)

Longevity

A study published in 2008 by the preservation research and testing division of the Library of Congress, most recordable CD products have a higher probability of a greater longevity compared to recordable DVD products.
