What is the Dark Green/black after birth from my dog?
My cousin's pittbull had puppies up to 12:30 pm. She has had nine puppies and four are dead. She has had a dark green after birth and she said it smelled bad. One of the four dead puppies came out covered in the dark green/black after birth. what should we do? Call a vet or just not worry about it? Is this normal? Please help! Type fast!
That is menconium staining -- essentially "puppy poop" from the pups defecating prior to being born. This is a sign that the mother was in labor without help (in distress) way too long. That's why so many are dead. She needed help and did not get it.
Clean up the pups, the stain will be on your hands for a day or two - it will wear off. Watch pups for proper nursing or any sign of infection (listen to their lungs twice a day). Weigh the pups twice a day with a digital kitchen scale to ensure that they are gaining weight. If they don't, go to yiour vet to learn how to tube feed.
This labor was way too hard on the mom. Personally, I'd take her and have her checked out. Carry the pups on hot water bottles, covered with towels, in a washbasket for safety. Mom may need a few shots to get the rest of the afterbirth out.
